Reverend Mackay arrived at Danshui in 1872, and rented a place to stay; it’s also the place where he performed religious service, medical practice, and teaching.  The following year, after some of his followers were baptized, he rented another place as a church.  As his followers grew, Rev. Mackay bought a piece of land and established a church, which became the origin of the Northern Taiwan Presbyterian Church.  In 1932, the building was in bad shape for continuing service, so as a gift of celebrating the 60th anniversary of Rev. Mackay’s stay in Taiwan, the building was rebuilt. The project was supervised and designed by Rev. G.W. Mackey, son of

Rev. Mackey, with pointed pillars, arched windows, and “strengthened brick work” in the interior.  The expanded rigid frame held the rooftop, while the outer walls showed orderly yet varying red brick laying patterns. Today, many churchgoers still come to Danshui church for service.
